The weather stayed very kind for us at the BCCS National Junior Golf Knockout Finals on the weekend of 24/25 September 2022. This final was only the second time the event had been held under the “BCCS” banner. The first event, after taking over the event from the Royal British Legion, was held in 2019, and then, in 2020, COVID-19 disrupted pretty much everything in the UK, including this event. Then, in 2021, with COVID-19 still unfortunately present, it was felt that youngsters should not be travelling around the UK to play golf, so the event was held over until 2022. And what an event it was!

Maybe it was all the waiting with pent-up demand for youngsters to resume competitive (yet friendly) golf, maybe it was the central location of Staverton Park, maybe it was the kind weather: whatever the reasons, the golf was great, the camaraderie was terrific, and the warmth and fun elements of the competition were there for all to see.

The semi-finals were played on Saturday and the finals and third and fourth place play-off took place on the Sunday, with the presentation straight after play.

All the team players and team managers were hosted by BCCS, and we all enjoyed a gala dinner on the Saturday evening, with about 40 attendees in all (team players, supporters, parents, grandparents, siblings etc.) and of course the prize presentation on Sunday afternoon.

In an extremely tight match, Peterborough Milton only just overcame Childwall in the first semi-final, while the young team of York overcame the team from Nevill.

Everyone present, competitors and spectators alike, commented on the excellent standard of golf on display, but just as importantly the spirit in which all the games were played. In this BCCS National Junior Golf Knockout format, all the matches are played over 18 holes, with every hole counting to the eventual result. This meant that as one two-person team were never completely sure how the other two-person team were doing and knowing that an aggregate score can change in the blink of an eye, the teams were focused and played their hearts out right to the very end. This made it great for the spectators, although we’re sure that the heartbeats of the Junior Organisers have only just returned to normal! It was that close, as befits a finals weekend of a national golf competition.

So well done to you all. Thank you for your support and thank you to the parents and supporters for making it such a wonderful weekend, played in great spirit, with some wonderful shot making on a very interesting course. We can’t wait to come back next year!
